Adopt a horse

What can you expect when adopting a horse from LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society?

We’re in this with you for the long run

When you adopt a retired thoroughbred racehorse through LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society, you are getting more than a horse. You’re getting an organization committed to your success in building a great relationship with your animal. We schedule regular updates in the first year to connect with you about care, retraining and more. We are always available to bounce ideas off, give advice and provide answers for you while you own the horse you adopted through LongRun.

Horses who have been expertly cared for

Retired thoroughbred racehorses that come through our program at LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society have been expertly cared for by a team of professionals including veterinarians, trainers, farriers, chiropractors and more.

Thoroughbreds are extremely intelligent, athletic and have a great work ethic. Our program takes advantage of these traits to help these horses discover and transition into a new career they love.

A beautiful 100-acre farm and skilled staff

There simply isn’t another retired thoroughbred racehorse adoption organization in Eastern Canada that has the facilities we do. Over 100 acres of beautiful landscape in Hillsburgh, Ontario with facilities for over 50 retired thoroughbred racehorses. Our skilled staff care for our residents seven days a week, 365 days a year, while the horses have plenty of room to play, relax and interact with each other.

An accredited, industry recognized partner

LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society, a non-profit organization, has undergone the intense scrutiny of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance which ensures our farm facility, policies and procedures meet their high standards. We have also been a successful recipient of annual grants from the Thoroughbred Charities of America in recognition of the excellent work LongRun does in caring for retired thoroughbred racehorses.

In addition to our farm, our main office is located at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada. The volunteer directors who comprise LongRun’s board are horse lovers from the racing industry and equestrian world. They bring a variety of helpful expertise.

All of this adds up to a real sense of confidence for our adopting and donating partners.

What if I adopt a horse somewhere else?

What is the cost of adopting a retired thoroughbred who hasn’t received the proper care from a trained staff of professionals? What would it look like to spend the time, money and energy to adopt a retired thoroughbred that hasn’t had even basic retraining? How frustrating would it be to adopt a horse to ride only to show a previously undisclosed injury prevents the horse from being ridden? The risk is simply too great and the only answer is to adopt with LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society.
