Longrun representatives had organized a day in conjunction with students from Georgian College to bring together our wonderful companions, Wild JJ (as seen in the photos) and Ice Bridge, a former Atto horse (JJ) and Samson fosteree, as part of a therapeutic recreation college programme and kids who participate in a variety of programming offered through Native Child and Fire Council.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their time with the horses, as well as worked at a number of horse related crafts being horse sock puppets and baked and decorated horse cookies. The highlight of the day as described by the eight youths who attended was “meeting JJ (aka Wild JJ) and “Reggie” (aka Ice Bridge).

The kids, Tyrone and Charlotte , are pictured after a grooming session with JJ.

Longrun reps said they had brutal weather on April 1st, very little opportunity to get good outdoor photos but are working together with both the foster farm, Laura Sa

unders, and Erin Heslop, to have Fire Council and Native Child participants out again in the near future. As well, this farm is offering a “hooked on horses” 8 week programme in which our horses will be compensated for their new purposeful work as companions, thus offsetting the cost of their board and providing them with more exposure to a wider community of “would be” horse-people. LongRun’s aim is to allow these wonderful horses to continue to have great purpose beyond their successful careers as racehorses while promoting and fostering solid horsemanship skills.

Contact us if you would like to participate in any classes going forward!

LongRun is happy to announce our 2012 Hunter Classic Series, kicking off May 12, 2012 at Palgrave, with the support of Nobleton Feedmill.

Our second show on August 25th with the support of Tri-Acta, and our $3000.00 finale on September 29th with the generous support of both Adena Springs North and Chiefswood Stables will both be held at Angelstone for the first time this year!

Also, check out Angelstone’s Facebook page to keep up to date with all of their tournament coverage. We would also like to congratulate the winner of Angelstone’s “Who is your favourite Thoroughbred” contest, LISA BALAZ! She has won a $300 private photo shoot by Victoria Clermont during one of the four weeks of the Angelstone Tournament this summer. They promise more exciting contests in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Below is Angelstone’s press release;

It is well known that there is a growing need within Canada to find caring owners to adopt retired Thoroughbred race horses. The LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society helps to bridge the gap between the horse racing industry and equestrian enthusiasts, making the adoption process as seamless as possible. The Society’s focus is on the retirement, retraining and adoption of off-track Thoroughbreds into permanent loving homes.

In partnership with Angelstone Tournaments, LongRun is proud to recognize, promote and reward Thoroughbred owners and riders in our 2012 Hunter Classic Series. Tournament President, Keean White is optimistic about working with LongRun to spread the word about all the fine work they are doing in the industry. “In the show jumping world, it is evident that Thoroughbreds have and continue to make a big impact both in the show ring and lesson arenas of farms across Canada. Angelstone and LongRun look forward to showcasing the talents of Thoroughbreds by offering a unique series specific to this breed of horses. By raising the exposure of Thoroughbreds in the sport, we hope that more enthusiasts can commit to working with LongRun to find homes for these fine animals.”

LongRun’s $4,500 Thoroughbred Hunter Series will take place at Angelstone Tournaments on August 25th (Angelstone National Phase I) and September 29th (Angelstone International). The Series will be open to all riders and Thoroughbred horses with fences being set at 3′, 3’3″ and 3’6″. Angelstone and LongRun would like to recognize Tri Acta, Adena Springs and Chiefswood Stables for their gracious support of the Series.

Premier Dalton McGuinty and his government are trying to make changes to the profit sharing of slot revenues they have in place contractually with Ontario’s racing industry despite the fact that the current arrangement has been highly profitable for the government and is essential to the health of the industry, the 60,000 people dependent on it for their livelihood and to the well-being and, indeed, the very survival of the beautiful and courageous horses we all love.

These changes would directly affect LongRun, and its horses, as our industry funding would be drastically reduced under these changes. We ask you, our friends, to please add your voice and concerns to those of the thousands of horsemen and women who have already contacted the government ….. WE NEED YOUR HELP A.S.A.P.!

Below are links to more information on the proposed changes to the profit sharing agreement. We ask that you take a few minutes to read, and watch the informative video below to become more informed on the issue.

Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association (OHRIA) has already put together an easy to fill out form, which will automatically send your email to all MPP’s in Ontario. It can be found here.

OHRIA has also launched their new website Value 4 Money which outlines all of the important facts about the slot revenue sharing agreement at ALL Ontario Racetracks, and what you can do to help!

From all of us here at LongRun, thank you for your assistance with this, and we hope that you will take the time to watch the wonderful video (below) put together by Laurie Langley, a rider and photographer from Fort Erie Racetrack.

At the heart of passion for horses can often be found a Thoroughbred Racehorse. Vivid recollection of horse races viewed myopically on a television screen weave their way through equine pursuits as we claim equine partners and pursue dreams of athletic achievement. The majesty, beauty and determination of every single horse straining his entire being to claim the finish line is a blueprint for the dream of a rider. Ask any horse lover if they have a favourite race horse and immediately a name will spring from their lips…Northern Dancer, Majestic Prince, Barbaro, Secretariat, Zenyatta.

The Thoroughbred racehorse is so compelling, he provides the impetus to seek association with his type. Underlying every rider’s dream of accomplishment is that long held memory of the first horse they saw streak past the finish line as the winner of the Kentucky Derby, the Queens Plate or the Breeders Cup. Regardless of the choice of discipline, underlying is the championship vision of raw power and courage, so well represented by the Thoroughbred and generating dreams of possibility for greatness and success.

Within every Thoroughbred beats the heart of a champion. “Pur Sange” as poetically defined by the French, describes a lineage directly traceable to only three horses and meticulously recorded. Every sporting horse breed or type carries thoroughbred blood for valid reasons of athleticism, durability, trainability and beauty. No other breed of horse can conjure all of these attributes. They are the domain of the Thoroughbred. It is those very characteristics which have inspired Canadian riders and elite athletes to channel Thoroughbred excellence into International sporting success. Individual medals and International competitive achievements in Eventing, Dressage, Jumping and even the relatively unknown FEI sanctioned cavalry sport of Tent Pegging, have been gained by Thoroughbreds.

Prestigous awards and inspiring performances for many riders can be attributed to the feats of the Thoroughbred and most were bred as racehorses. Canada has its heroes in Canadian Club (Dunwurkin), Big Dee, Bonheur (Colonel W), Kahlua, Branch County (Traffic Sub), Rath Patrick. This doesn’t nearly document the long list of incredibly talented Thoroughbreds who have claimed victory for Canadian riders. Hopes for future glory lie in the equine partners of staunch Thoroughbred enthusiasts like Selena O’Hanlon and Jessica Phoenix (with her latest potential star, Down by the Docks, LongRun adoptee from the farm of John and Maggie LeBlanc).

The uncanny desire to achieve is bred into the Thoroughbred. Regardless of the discipline, skill or aspiration of the rider, the thoroughbred has demonstrated his ability to perform. From trail horse to western dressage; eventing to tent pegging; companion to rehabilitation; the motivation of a Thoroughbred is to succeed. Cloaked in unsurpassed physical beauty beats a noble heart, great trainable intelligence and an unresentful willingness to try. Characteristics which form the foundation of the great racehorse are easily translated into the next great riding experience. The greatest untapped resource for equestrian achievement lies in our own North American Thoroughbred and to support the claim, the words of George Morris, Legendary Hunter/Jumper stylist: “Somehow, we have to get back to the horses we have in this country. There are tens of thousands of horses out there. There are Gem Twists out there. The American Thoroughbred is the best sport horse in the world. I had two very early European mentors, Otto Heuckeroth at Ox Ridge, who was a great horseman, and Bertalan de Némethy. Both of those Europeans told me repeatedly, ‘George, the best horses in the world are these American Thoroughbred horses.’ ” The gilded ancestry of the esteemed racehorse coupled with the athletic abilities coveted in all equine sport can be had in a Thoroughbred….along with the stamp of approval from World Class Equestrians and Trainers. The next Keen, Touch of Class, Neville Bardos or Idle Dice are already here, sporting that memorable pedigree and waiting to join the ranks of Thoroughbreds in Sporting Halls of Fame.
